6 Simple Ways to Say NO -- and Boost Your Self-Esteem!

Remember… knowing when to say "no" to others with clarity and kindness is saying "yes" to yourself.

The surprising thing about saying no to someone when they want something that you don't want to give--such as a favor, your time, your help, or a loan--is that once you do it, you feel GREAT. And you have a much higher opinion of yourself afterward!

Try these six simple ways to say no. You can practice them ahead of time so you'll be ready when you need to use them!

  1. "Thanks, but I think I'm going to pass on that."

  2. "The enthusiastic/polite/helpful part of me would like to say yes, but the rest of me is more realistic/already overcommitted/is just too tired."

  3. "Thanks, but I don't think I will."

  4. "That's not really something I enjoy."

  5. "That's not going to work for me."

  6. When you get the hang of it and want to have some fun, try these! Just be sure to say them with a big smile.
  • "Not in a million years!"

  • "Not in this lifetime!"

  • "Forget it!"

  • "Dream on!"

  • "No way!"

  • "Are you out of your mind?"
